The Drummer Boy


Wiping the sweat from his brow, Jamal sat behind his drum atthe corner of 14th and Maple – a busy intersection, downtown. He had just completed playing for the 4th time that day and was pleased with the loose change and dollars of different denominations fluttering in the breeze; blowing through his drum case. He figured he would have to play at least 2 more times to earn enough money for food and shelter for that evening. This has been Jamal’s life since being thrown out of his mom’s house, 2 weeks prior. 

  Jamal had always been headstrong and kind of selfish. This was due partly to his being an only child and a mom that doted on his every need to overcompensate for the absence of a ‘father’ figure in Jamal’s life. Not realizing how hard his mom had worked
